Cars with an "unknown" tag need basic car identification.
Please note that cars are often modified. Boxcars often get new doors, ladders and steps may be removed or modified. Note details unlikely to be changed with rebuilding or repurposing, like ribs.
Builders may adjust the design of cars during production lifetime. This is particularly true in the case of covered hoppers, with blind panels gaining ribs, etc.

pre-1971, as per upper side plate (near roof) has single "line" parallel to roof. post 1971 had three "lines" parallel to roof.
